Academic Day is an integral part of freshman orientation. It is an occasion to demonstrate to freshman students the power of education and the relevance of learning in recognizing and analyzing dimensions of life that can be obstacles to a just world. The theme for 2003-04 is "Engaging Justice: Challenges to Personhood." Since sexuality is a subject that is of great concern to students, and a subject that is also shrouded in considerable mystery and silence, we will use it as a lens through which to explore the way culture can cloak trends and practices that have damaging consequences to human dignity and the realization of personhood. The
Director of Academic
Day & Salons is Mara Adelman, PhD, Department of Communication. The Lemieux Library's professional staff has gathered an extensive, thought-provoking set of resources on this year's theme. Academic Day Schedule The morning of September 22nd, students and faculty will congregate at the Connolly Center.
Our
keynote speaker this Fall will be: Professor Jodi O’Brien,
associate professor and Chair of the Department of Society, Justice and
Culture. She will address
this year's theme by focusing upon the justice challenge of
promoting sexual awareness and responsibility in a cultural climate of
silence and shame about sexuality in general.

Academic Salons: Academic Day will initiate a year-long process of conversation, titled "Academic Salons" about the power of education to promote awareness and responsibility, especially as students gain increased competency in using the tools of reflection and critical analysis. These salons are being sponsored by various faculty and groups on campus. Seattle Times story about Salons (3/2/04) |
