The Seattle University Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with approving research proposals involving human subjects for the purpose of ensuring that the rights of these subjects are protected.

    Authority

The IRB is accountable to the Provost who appoints the chair and the members.

    Meetings

The IRB will meet on a monthly basis during the academic year. A meeting may be cancelled at the discretion of the IRB chair if no full board protocols are to be reviewed. Meeting dates will be announced on the IRB Website.

    Membership

The membership of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is constituted so as to assure a broad range of competencies and includes at least one non-scientist member and one external member who has no direct relationship to the University. The IRB members are appointed for three-year terms. Due to the nature of the work and the complexity of federal rules and regulations for research involving human subjects, IRB members can be reappointed to additional three-year terms indefinitely at the discretion of the Provost.
