Internships

Seattle University offers numerous sponsored study abroad programs that have an internship component. These include:

  • Health and Human Serivces in Belize (NURS) - This course will also explore the history, culture, health and human services infrastructure of Belize, in the context of global issues in nursing and public health. Students will also spend 10 days working with agencies in Belize according to their interests and skill set. (Open to College of Nursing students and Social Work Majors only.)
  • Belize Internship (Theology 496) -  Student work with the SU campus coordinator (Dr. Tanya Hayes) for a specific placement in Belize in relation to the student's major area of study, e.g., with social service agencies, governmental agencies, medical clinics, churches, and other organizations. The student will receive direct supervision from the organization or agency representative with whom he or she works. 
  • Denmark Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen - Students can choose courses from across the disciplines available in order to form a program that best suits you. Most courses meet twice a week for an hour and a half and tend to be fairly small. Students should expect the workload to be similar to that at SU. Programs of study at DIS include: Biomedicine, Psychology, International Business, Communication...etc.
  • Legal Internship/Externship - The School of Law provides funding to students for established internships with outstanding organizations in Cambodia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The Externship Program may have part-time positions available in various countries in the summer and has full-time international externships available for spring and fall semesters. (For Seattle University School of Law students only.)
  • Guatemala Law Program - The Guatemala program will offer students the opportunity to study law in Spanish, to learn about Latin American law, to study with Latin American students, to take courses from Guatemalan law professors, and to complete an externship with a legal institution in Guatemala. (For Seattle University School of Law students only.)
  • SIT Ghana - Students will take a language course in Fante with emphasis on speaking and comprehension. An interdisciplinary course conducted in English will focus on African Diaspora studies from a Ghanaian perspective with lectures on Ghanaian culture and society and African Diaspora Studies.
  • Japan Engineering Internship - Through a cooperative agreement with Kogakuin University, Engineering students conduct 4-8 week projects including internships in Tokyo engineering firms.
  • Social Work in Mexico - The aim of the program is to develop cross-culturally competent, ethical social work professionals with a global perspective by providing a semester of transformative, experiential learning focused on social and economic justice. (Open to Social Work Majors only.)
  • International Development Internship Program (INIP400-402) - Students are challenged to explore the root causes and consequences of situations that undermine the well-being of individuals in the developing world. Placements are available in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
  • Research for Development Graduate Program (PUBM591-PUBM593) - THE RGDP is a three-phase program open to all interdisclipinary graduate students. The goal of the program is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of qualitative research methods and the application of these methods by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for international development endeavors.
  •         

  • CIEE and IES - SU approved study abroad organizations that offers numerous internship opportunities. Students have completed CIEE internships in London, Morrocco, and Taipei. For more information on CIEE internships, click here. For more information on IES internships, click here.
