Sophia University International Exchange Program Spring or Fall

Defining characteristics: Sophia University is renowned for its international environment! As a student at Sophia University you will be studying along side other international students as well as Japanese nationals in courses which are taught in English.

Seattle University students participate in an exchange program with Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan with full credit and financial aid privileges.

Academics: The university's focus is interdisciplinary, including anthropology, sociology, business, geography, art, history, literature, psychology, mathematics, and various language offerings.  Course offerings are posted on the Sophia University website.

Because the majority of the classes are taught in English, you can select courses from many different disciplines. Students are required to take a Japanese language course in addition to this coursework. Language classes typically meet each day while other courses will meet twice a week for 90 minute sessions. The fall semester begins early September and commences early February. Spring semester runs from late March to late July.

Credits: Full-time enrollment in 15 semester credits during one semester at Sophia University will earn 22.5 quarter credits towards an SU degree. A year abroad at Sophia university will allow a student to earn 45 quarter credits.

Housing: Housing options include home stays, on-campus dormitories for men, and off-campus dormitories for women.  Prices vary depending upon the living situation chosen.

Room and Board fees (approximately $6000) are paid directly to Sophia University
Airfare, insurance, and personal expenses are not included.

100% of Financial Aid is portable.

Application Requirements:

Must have a 3.0 GPA

  • Priority is given to students whose major requires a study abroad component and who have taken Japanese at SU
  • Priority given to upperclass students
  • Previous Asian Studies courses (History, Anthropology, etc) recommended
