Study Abroad Course Development: Things to Consider

When developing a short-term, study abroad course proposal, there are several things to take into consideration. First, program development takes time.  A one year (at least!) lead time is strongly recommended.  Each SU College and School its own requirements for the program proposal and approval process, so you should consult with your dean to find out what deadline you need to meet. In addition, review the Timeline for Study Abroad Courses for suggestions of when you should have things completed. It also includes the dates and actions that are required by the Education Abroad Office.

One of our colleagues, Professor Madhu Rao, has created a document titled An Approximate Tutorial, in which he shares his tips for program development, all of which are based on his personal experiences with the process.

Consult with Gina Lopardo, Director of Education Abroad (glopardo@seattleu.edu), for advice, policy guidance, support and curricular considerations as well as assistance in identify in-country resources.
