Spanish Summer Language in Salamanca, Spain

Academic Program

This eight-week intensive Spanish language and culture program has been designed jointly by Seattle University and the Universidad de Salamanca (Spain), the objective is for students to acquire and develop competency in Spanish as a Second Language. Upon successfully completing the summer program at the Universidad de Salamanca, students will earn 15 Seattle University Spanish Language and Literature credits at the 300 level. The 15 credits earned in Salamanca will satisfy the Study Abroad requirement far a minor in Spanish.

A Seattle University faculty member will introduce students to the Universidad de Salamanca and stay in the city for two weeks.

Location

Salamanca, a University city of excellence, in which more than 40,000 students live. Its streets are full of culture carved in stone, like the House of the Shells (la Casa de las Conchas), the Cathedrals or the Main Square (la Plaza Mayor), and of living knowledge. Furthermore, this city has been converted into a world icon of teaching Spanish, and for this reason every year thousands of foreign students approach the language of Cervantes in the cobbled streets of Salamanca.

Estimated Program Cost

2011 Summer Program: $6,500 program fee payable to Seattle University.

The program fee covers tuition, class materials, internet access in the language center, language laboratory, tutorial exercises twice a week in the afternoons, special activities with related class assignments, Spanish films with discussions to follow once a week, conversation practice with Spanish students, two afternoons a week, one guided tour of the city, five excursions, lodging and meals to be paid by the students), lodging and meals with a Spanish family for 8 weeks, double rooms (single rooms may be available at an additional cost), medical and travel insurance (from the day of arrival in Salamanca for this program to the day of departure.)

The cost of the program does not include airfare nor transportation to and from the Madrid airport (Barajas) and Salamanca.

The only form of financial aid available for summer programs are private loans.

Eligibility to Participate

  • Good academic and conduct standing.
  • Completed Spanish 235 or equivalent by the start of the Program
