Defining Characteristics

Rigorous, upper-intermediate or advanced Spanish coursework in Culture and Civilization, Literature, Business Spanish, Politics, Economics, Art History, History, etc. Resident staff facilitate cultural immersion through homestay, language partners, art events, cultural activities and excursions around Spain.

Seattle University students participate in the ILACA-Willamette University program in historically rich and beautiful Granada in southern Spain with full credit and financial aid privileges.

Note to Spanish Language and Literature Majors/Minors - This is the official university program in Spain approved by Modern Languages and Literatures for its high quality academic and cultural programming. Credit at the 300 level or above will not be transferred from other Spain programs without exceptional academically-based justification. Requests for exception require a Petition for Exception to Policy. See an Education Abroad Advisor. MLL expects to be somewhat flexible about this policy as they transition to a new curriculum in the major/minor.

Courses

The first month of each semester is a required instensivo - intensive Spanish. Following this, all students are required to enroll in a Speaking and Writing course as well as one of the following core courses: Spanish Culture & Civilization in the fall or Hispanic Literary Studies in the spring. Students then choose electives from a list of carefully selected courses offered at the University of Granada, Centro de Lenguas Modernas. Subjects include Literature, Business Spanish, Politics, Economics, Art History, History, etc. All are taught in Spanish.

Eligibility

The Granada program is open to students in all fields of study with at least sophomore status. Students must have completed 6 quarters of university level spanish (235 or equivalent) for fall semester participation by the time of departure. 2.75 cumulative GPA and B grades in Spanish prerequisites. Selection is based on individual maturity, as well as evidence of academic achievement and seriousness of purpose.

Dates

The program operates on the semester calendar. Fall semester (fall quarter) runs September - December. Spring semester (winter and spring quarters) runs January - May.

Fall semester earns 24 SU quarter credits and Spring semester earns 27 quarter credits for a successful completion of a full-load of courses.

Costs & Financial Aid

All financial aid including SU grants and scholarships apply. Comprehensive fees include Seattle University tuition, excursions, housing and meals, course materials, medical insurance, on-site orientation, expert support pre-departure and on-site.

Airfare and personal expenses are not included.

Application

Complete the SU Education Abroad Global Application, linked below, and submit it to the Education Abroad Office by the published SU deadlines. To maximize an opportunity for acceptance into the Granada program, it is advisable to apply for both fall and spring semesters, indicating a first choice on the application.
