CIEE or SIT study abroad in Ghana

The programs offered in Ghana are through two separate providers, both of which offer great programs in very different styles.

CIEE Program SIT Program
Academics:
  • Classroom based experience based on the British educational model.
  • Classes are with Ghanaian and other international students.
  • Internships are available
  • Large class sizes, typically 100 students or more.
  • Take a six week Twi language course.
  • Grades based primarily on final exam.
Academics:
  • Field-study based experience
  • The thematic seminar is in cooperation with a host university, though students do not enroll full time in the instituion
  • Students perform a one month independent study on a project of their choosing at the end of the program
  • Typically 15-20 American students
  • Take a four credit Fante language course
  • Grades based on Independent Study Project, final language assessment, and overall program synthesis and assessment
Housing:
  • Students have the option of on-campus dormitory housing, off-campus house, or homestay
Housing:
  • 6 weeks of homestay
  • The rest of the trip students are accommodated in hostels, private homes, educational institutions, or small hotels.
Immersion:
  • A lot of interaction with the local community is available through volunteer opportunities and getting involved on campus.
  • Field trips to local points of interest with CIEE
  • Independent travel on weekends
Immersion:
  • Visit many local historic and cultural sites to better the understanding of the African Diaspora.
  • Homestays provide an opportunity to see how Ghanaians live
  • Rural visit affords students direct knowledge of rural life by living without electricity and running water
