Seattle University Committees

Virtually every aspect of our school, institutional or otherwise, is critically analyzed and addressed by University Committees. These groups -- made up of faculty, staff, and administrators -- meet and form initiatives to improve our campus, our education, and our student experience. These committees value student perspective. It is the responsibility of the University Affairs committee, a sub-group of SGSU, to find and appoint student representatives. These appointees represent the student voice and are responsible for corresponding with SGSU to ensure continuity between University initiatives and the student body. If you are interested in an opportunity to develop leadership, management, and communication skills, check out the list of University Committees below and consider applying.

Thanks,

SGSU & University Affairs

Board of Trustees: Academic Affairs

This committee guides policy making in the area of academics at the University. For instance the Committee vets proposals for new academic programs and any changes to the curriculum of an existing degree program before presenting them for approval before the full Board of Trustees. After approval by the Board of Trustees, a program will be implemented and offered to students. The student will learn about one of the main governance structures in an institution of higher learning and interact with external people who help to guide the University at the topmost level.

The student serving on this committee must be highly accomplished academically, mature, and able to maintain strict confidentiality. It is also helpful if the student is an active listener and an effective communicator. Click for Meeting Times.

Board of Trustees: Facilities

The Board of Trustees: Facilities Committee is an ideal opportunity for Civil Engineering Majors to learn and offer input on initiatives surrounding the physical aspects of campus. Topics discussed on this committee could range anywhere from planning a rooftop garden on Bellarmine to the construction of new, sustainable buildings on University grounds. The student representative will serve as the primary contact for Student Government of Seattle University and provide us with information and updates for which SGSU will provide to the student body (when necessary).

The student serving on this committee must commit to a two year appointment and therefore may not be a graduating senior. This student must be mature, responsible, and feel confident and comfortable communicating with executive members of our University’s administration. Click for Meeting Times.

Rank and Tenure

This committee is one of the most important for faculty. The student representative sitting on this committee would further hone critical thinking and analytical skills. The representative will learn about one of the academic systems in place in an institution of higher learning – how faculty are reviewed and selected for advancement toward tenure and promotion in professional rank. In effect, this is a personnel performance review process and knowledge and experience gained from serving a term on this committee would lend itself to any management position and supervisorial responsibilities and, in particular, within the area of human resources.

The student serving on this committee must be highly accomplished academically, mature, and able to maintain strict confidentiality. It is also helpful if the student is an active listener and an effective communicator. Click for Meeting Times

Campus Store Advisory Board

As the only revenue generating entity on campus, the Campus Store has a unique role in serving students with lower cost textbook options and maintaining a profitable status.  Participate first hand in the decision making process which will determine the operating policies of the Campus Store.  Board members will engage with students, faculty, administration and Bookstore staff in board level discussions about current and future operations, priorities and opportunities.

Students serving on this board are required to serve one year; however, a multi-year commitment is encouraged. Students will meet at least once a quarter. We are looking to appoint two students from each undergrad year, a graduate student, and a law student. Click for Meeting Times.

SU Core Products and Apparel Council

Product Types and Styling: Identify the core products and styles that will be inventoried and made available through all delivery channels.

Branding:  Determine the dominant “marks” to be used on core products and apparel.

Sourcing: Identify and develop sourcing channels for products and apparel including team sports apparel through Nike, Under Armour and other performance apparel manufacturers.

Delivery:  Determine appropriate delivery channels and structure for various constituent groups including departmental purchasing, students, alumni, friends of the university and others.  Recommendations should include consideration for the development of third-party opportunities, standards for athletic and other events, logistical efficiencies and on-line ordering through the Campus Store and other channels. Meeting Times pending.

Committee for Accreditation

The immediate task ahead of the committee is to write the Year Three Report, due spring 2013.  Staff members appointed by the Executive Team have primary responsibility for writing the report, but students need to have a window and voice into the process.  This helps ensure that the report accurately represents the university. Click for Meeting Times.

Finance Committee

This committee approves the budget and provides financial oversight for SU. Highly sensitive and confidential information may be discussed during these meetings. This appointment requires a two year commitment. Therefore we are looking for a sophomore or junior (preferably a Finance Major). Click for Meeting Times.

Investment Committee

This committee is responsible for managing the $180m endowment fund and investing the funds to meet the required returns for SU. This committee, unfortunately, is not really a forum for any serious student input because a lot of what is being discussed is rooted in past meetings (aging years back). Still, having a student serve on the committee is a way to demonstrate transparency. This appointment also requires a two year commitment is an incredible opportunity for development and to gain experience with business professionals. Click for Meeting Times
