The conference keynote speaker is Rev. Sr. Anne Nasimiyu-Wasike, professor of religious studies at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. Her keynote address is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Justice in Society. Nasimiyu-Wasike is a systematic theologian who obtained her doctorate from Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh, Pa. She has held fellowships in the U.K. and the U.S., and is a leading member of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians, an ecumenical group of Africa’s foremost women theologians.

This year’s CSJS seminars include “Postcolonial Theory: Knowledge, Power & Resistance” (facilitated by Tayyab Mahmud, School of Law); “The Quest for Justice in Latin America” (facilitated by Marc McLeod, College of Arts & Sciences); and "Masculinities" (facilitated by Debby A. October 27, 2006: The Path of the Spirit: Indigenous Rights, Intercultural Dialogue and A Collaborative Response to Preserve Diversity Conference with Keynote Speech: Biocolonialism and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by Debra Harry, Executive Director of the Indigenous Peoples Council on Biocolonialism (IPCB). Ms. Harry's participation is sponsored by the Seattle University Center for the Study of Justice in Society.

November 28, 2006: Women Confronting Globalization: Cultural Resistance, Fair Trade and Human Rights with guest speaker, Cecilia Santiago Vera from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Wyckoff Auditorium (ENGR 200).

Cecilia Santiago Vera is a social psychologist from Chiapas, Mexico.  Her work is focused primarily on gender and multi-cultural studies and strengthening the community.  She has worked with the displaced population, especially with women survivors of the Acteal massacre, people in prison, and indigenous communities that live in violent contexts.  Cecilia collaborates on the Psychological Project in Chiapas, a Mexican NGO that works to develop psychological interventions in populations experiencing human rights violations to take back the resources of the community.

February 8, 2007: justice scholarship series (jss): Faculty Luncheon and Book Talk for Community and Difference: Teaching, Pluralism and Social Justice, with authors: Roberto Peña, Kristin Guest and Larry Matsuda.  Awarded the Philip C. Chinn Multicultural Book Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education in 2006, and selected as one of the “Books for Change” by the Elliott Bay Book Company, this edited volume tackles the complexities of teaching for social justice in a multicultural world. The authors/editors will facilitate an interactive discussion among faculty about what motivates scholarship about social justice. This luncheon is the second in a series of social events this year to highlight the justice scholarship of Seattle University faculty.
