K-12 Leadership Team

Program Goals:

As a program of the Center for Service and Community Engagement and a key participant of the Seattle University Youth Initiative (SUYI), the K-12 Leadership Team provides academic assistance to youth in local schools. We are committed to 1) to helping Seattle University students grow into ethical and effective leaders, and 2) to neighborhood youth become successful in school and in life.  To ensure positive outcomes on campus and in the community, the K-12 Academic Support Leadership Program offers a way for undergraduate students to develop as leaders in service.

Through participation in the K-12 Academic Support Leadership Program, participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the Seattle University Youth Initiative and long-term strategies to improve the academic achievement of neighborhood youth.
  • Acquire skills for effective cross-cultural communication to build positive relationships with ethnically diverse low-income populations.
  • Learn tutoring/teaching strategies to support the academic progress of elementary, middle and high school students in SUYI partner schools.
  • Gain an understanding of being a leader for education equity through increased self-knowledge of personal values, communication and leadership styles, strengths, and areas of growth.
  • Develop skills for creating quality service and reflection experiences among college peers.
  • Connect service and leadership experiences to “vocational discernment”, or decisions made regarding future plans (e.g. chosen major, career path, post-graduate service, or graduate program).
