Student Leaders for the Common Good

SLCG 0910

The Center for Service and Community Engagement seeks to help students grow into ethical and effective leaders in the community. The Center offers the year-long Student Leaders for the Common Good (SLCG) program as a way for undergraduate students to develop as leaders in service in our local communities and on campus.

Program Components

Student Leaders for the Common Good program is comprised of four components. Active engagement in all of the following areas is required for students to maintain their status in the program.

Leadership in Service: SLCG members work with CSCE staff to coordinate service programs, develop community partnerships, collaborate with campus partners, and lead their peers in service and reflection experiences. Students may apply for the following service leadership positions:

Leadership Training: SLCG members take part in two leadership retreats (fall/spring) and 3-4 Community Night gatherings each quarter. These retreats and community nights offer an opportunity to explore and expand upon SLCG members' leadership skills, understanding of the ethics of service, and offer time for reflection and community building. Attendance at the retreats and community nights are required for participation in the program.

Supporting CSCE Programs and Partnerships: SLCG members assist with the CSCE Programs a few times per year.

Service in the Community:  Consistent, sustained engagement at an agency provides the highest quality service for our community partners and the deepest learning opportunity for our students.  We expect students in SLCG to commit 3-5 hours of service to week at a community organization of the student's choosing.
