In the fall of 2010, Seattle University launched the Seattle University Youth Initiative (SUYI), a long-term commitment that unites our campus and the wider community to create a pipeline of support for low-income and vulnerable youth and families living in the Bailey Gatzert neighborhood.  That same fall, the Children's Literacy Project (CLP) merged with the Center for Service and Community Engagement.   The merge greatly enhanced our capacity.  It also changed some aspects of the CLP.   First, we redeployed our resources to focus on activities in our SUYI Pipeline Schools: Bailey Gatzert Elementary, Washington Middle School, and Garfield High School.  Second, we now pay close attention to the impact we have on K-12 academic progress. And third, we stopped referring to ourselves as the Children's Literacy Project. Instead we are now known as the Seattle University Youth Initiative K-12 Program.  But our goal has remained the same: to provide the academic support and encouragement to youth so that they are successful in school and in life.

Each quarter we recruit, train and place volunteers, service learners and academic mentors at Bailey Gatzert, Washington Middle School and Garfield High School.  We invite you to participate! To Inspire Youth and to Impact our local community.
